Pilates Teacher Interview with Alanna Bottomley in Kent

Pilates Instructor Interview with Alanna Bottomley

Q: Which part of Kent are you based in? A: You can find me in Ashford, Canterbury and Deal.

Q:What was your first experience in Pilates like? Do you remember your first class? A: My first class was at aged 12 as a warm up before ballet class at The London Junior Ballet School. The only thing i'd heard about Pilates was that 'it makes you taller' i was rather excited about this!

Q:Who or what inspired you to become a Pilates teacher, what was that first moment when you realized a career in Pilates was for you! A: I was inspired by the remedial work i'd done over a period of 5 years whilst battling with injury and coming to terms with not being able to dance professionally . Pilates had been the only thing that had made me feel positive during quite a difficult time.

Q:Is there anybody who has particularly inspired or influenced you in your career and why? A: Alan Herdman and Physiotherapist Shirley Hancock who had known me as a young dancer were fantastic in inspiring me to use any tools i had to help people.

Q:Who did you undertake your training with and why? A:I studied with Alan Herdman for a whole year and when i wasn't in the studio, i was recruiting guniea pigs!

Q:What was the last workshop or course you went on? A: I met with various health professionals from Kent and London to learn more about hyper-mobility syndromes and how i can help those affected by it.

Q:Explain what Pilates means to you in one sentence. A: It's the silent hero of my life.

Q: Which Pilates exercise is your favorite? A: I love how 'The Roll Up' feels on my body but i'm also a sucker for 'The Single Leg Stretch'!

Q: Which is your nemeses or least favorite? A: Probably 'The side plank' i find it eternally difficult!

Q: If there was one word in your Pilates vocabulary that get used the most, what would that be? A: Probably 'rest' i have very hard working clients who will push themselves hard but it's about quality over quantity.

Q:What’s in your pilates bag today? A: A nak'd bar for energy.

Q: If you weren’t a Pilates teacher what job would you be doing instead? A: One of my main passions is the theatre so anything to do with that!
